Pregnant building

August 30, 2007

Surfing on one of my favourite blogs i found a picture of Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset´s Belly Door from 2006. Well, that object didn´t really do a lot for me, but that may be because i didn´t really spent time thinking about it. My mind immediately switched to another – to me – much more interesting project i saw a while ago.

Architect Hiroshi Nakamuro realised this residential building in Tokyo in 2006. I think this “pregnant building” is a wonderful implementation of the concept that a house should protect and shelter its owner.
The space create by the “belly” on the inside is simply a wonderful, original new place. It´s not an undefined space, but a (safe) place to be.
