Maps I

October 8, 2007

I love maps. Be it the facebook application “where-i´ve-been”, the World Freedom Atlas or even google maps. Anything really. Maps can tell us so much about the world – and how people see it. I think it´s fascinating, for example, that -for most people – a world map means Europe and Africa in the middle, America on the right and Asia on the left. Yet for americans shouldn´t it be the american continents in the middle? And for Asians Asia and Australia? Those kind of maps look so interesting…and well, foreign in a way.
One of my favourite projects is the Worldmapper, “where territories are re-sized on each map according to the subject of interest.”

And maps of our new world – the web. The “un-mappable” internet. Probably the only place we´ll never have a complete map from.

But still these visualisations of the internet by Chris Harrison though only showing a small part of it are beautiful.
